At 17, Jordan McCloughan is a senior in high school with a passion for physics and a love for music His favorite class this year is Calculus, a subject that challenges and excites him.
What truly excites him is his upcoming trip to the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. “I am very excited to be attending with some of the incredible people I have met in 4-H,” he shares. His journey through the 4-H program has been nothing short of transformative, shaping him into a confident leader and a beacon of hope for his community.
Jordan’s 4-H journey started at the age of nine, encouraged by his father, a former 4-H member. His first experience was at a shooting sports practice, a moment that left a lasting impression. “I was a little nervous at first, but I caught on and was hooked to the program immediately,” he remembers. Over the years, Jordan has explored various projects, from shooting sports to the country ham project, and found his true passion in the science, engineering, and technology (SET) program.

His passion for physics began in his sophomore year after a visit to a planetarium. A show on dark matter piqued his interest, setting him on a path toward a career in physics research. “It was fascinating,” Jordan recalls. “I became interested in this near the end of my sophomore year and have been excited to learn more ever since.”
Throughout his 4-H journey, Jordan has been guided by mentors who have left an indelible mark on his life. Samantha Miculinich, Torey Earle, and his 4-H agent, Elijah Wilson, have all played significant roles in his development. “They have been there for me every step of the way, encouraging me to go for greater things,” Jordan says with gratitude.
Jordan’s favorite aspect of 4-H is the diverse program areas that allow members to explore multiple interests. The friendships and experiences he has gained through 4-H have been instrumental in his personal growth. “4-H has elevated me as a person and has shown others that I am a capable young person,” he reflects. As a member of the extension council and the local chamber of commerce, Jordan continues to contribute to his community, embodying the values and skills he has gained from 4-H.
Growing up in Burkesville, a small town with limited activities and school programs, presented its own set of challenges. However, Jordan’s involvement in county and city development programs has allowed him to address these issues head-on. “I am involved with many county and city development programs aimed at keeping our youth in Cumberland County,” he explains. His 4-H experience has equipped him with essential skills like networking and public speaking, which have been invaluable in his community work.

Outside the classroom, Jordan’s life is a symphony of activities. He plays the saxophone and is currently honing his skills in composing original music for different ensembles. His taste in music leans towards soft, relaxing tunes, while his movie preferences are adventurous and thought-provoking. This blend of creativity and curiosity defines Jordan’s character.
Jordan McCloughan’s story is a testament to the impact of 4-H in shaping young leaders and fostering a sense of community and purpose. His journey is just beginning, and with the foundation he has built through 4-H, the future looks bright for this aspiring physicist and dedicated community leader. As he prepares to take on new challenges and opportunities, Jordan remains a shining example of what it means to grow, learn, and lead.
In the words of Jordan himself, “4-H has helped me find my spark.”
