John May, a native of Wolfe County, Kentucky, grew up on a cattle and tobacco farm. His early involvement in 4-H, particularly in public speaking and demonstrations, helped him build confidence and develop skills that have been invaluable throughout his life. These experiences were instrumental in shaping his ability to speak in front of large crowds, a skill he continues to use in his professional and volunteer roles.

After graduating from Eastern Kentucky University, John returned to Wolfe County to begin his career. He started as an Industrial Technology Teacher, then transitioned to a Project Manager role for a Canadian-based manufacturing company. Eventually, he became a private business owner for a decade before joining an Electric Utility Cooperative, where he focuses on sustainability, energy, environmental impacts, and conservation.
John’s commitment to his community is evident through his various roles. He serves on the 4-H Foundation Board and the Board of Directors for Commercial Bank in West Liberty, Kentucky. Additionally, he dedicates much of his free time to the Wolfe County Search & Rescue Team, where he serves as Chief.

John’s involvement with 4-H continued into adulthood. As a 4-H Foundation Board member for the past four years, he saw this role as an opportunity to give back to an organization that significantly influenced his development. On the board, he serves on the Finance Committee, contributing to the organization’s financial health and sustainability.
In his professional role at Licking Valley Rural Electric Cooperative, John is part of the sustainability committee, focusing on energy, environmental impacts, and conservation. He believes that 4-H can play a crucial role in natural resources education by providing youth with hands-on learning experiences and projects that emphasize the importance of the environment and sustainability.
John views 4-H as a vital part of the community, fostering youth development through leadership opportunities and community engagement. He believes that 4-H’s hands-on learning experiences are essential in shaping well-rounded, responsible individuals.
