Since 4-H’s humble beginning more than 100 years ago, its primary mission has been youth development. 4-H and its programs allow young people to learn leadership skills and experience personal growth, which creates a great foundation for when those youngsters go to college.
The Kentucky 4-H Foundation is pleased to help some of these youngsters continue their leadership development and personal growth in college by awarding scholarships to them. To be eligible for the Kentucky 4-H Foundation’s 2013 college scholarships, 4-H members must graduate from high school in 2013, be a resident of Kentucky, and have been an active 4-H member for at least two years. Additional guidelines and applications are linked below.
Farm Credit Mid-America Scholarships
These four scholarships of $500 each are sponsored by Farm Credit Mid-America. The scholarships are awarded based on 4-H involvement, followed by financial need, then academic achievement. These scholarships are just one of the many ways that Farm Credit Mid-America supports Kentucky 4-H. In addition to being one of the Foundation’s longest dedicated annual donors, the organization recently helped to launch Phase II of the 4-H Camp Improvement Campaign with a commitment of more than $75,000.
The Michael Bandy/Ale-8-One Scholarship
The second foundation scholarship is made possible by an endowment established by Ms. Brenda Bandy, mother of Michael Bandy, and the annual support from the Ale-8-One Bottling Company. Michael was a member of the Lexington morning radio show “Bandy and Bailey” until his untimely passing in 2008.
Michael created a Barbeque Sauce with a Kentucky flair by adding Ale-8-One to it. Together, Ms. Bandy and Ale-8-One established this scholarship in 2010 to honor Michael’s life and his passion for helping youth. For 2013, the 4-H Foundation will award one $1,000 scholarship to a 4-H member based on financial need, followed by 4-H involvement.
The scholarship applications can be accessed by clicking on the links below or by contacting your county 4-H Agent. The deadline for scholarship applications is Friday, May 17, 2013. (The applications must be postmarked by this date). The winners will be recognized during the State 4-H Teen Conference held June 10-13, 2013.
On behalf of the 4-H Foundation, I want to extend our sincere appreciation to Farm Credit Mid-America, Ms. Brenda Bandy, and the Ale-8-One Bottling Company for the outstanding support they have provided for creating and endowing of these scholarships.
